This 40-year-old man attempted to use a kids’ slide: Several fire units were needed to rescue him

Ah to be young again. Enjoying carefree summer days goofing around at the local playground. That is perhaps what one Connecticut man was thinking when he decided to try out the slide at the Northeast Elementary School in the Town of Vernon.

However, the blissful joy turned into “a unique call” for emergency services. Around 4:30 on Sunday 17 August, the Town of Vernon Fire Department, Vernon EMS, and Vernon PD were dispatched to rescue the 40-year-old who had gotten himself into quite the pickle, stuck halfway down the tube slide.

Hot temperatures and extreme discomfort

When the first responders arrived on the scene, they found the man wedged feet and head first in the middle of the tube slide. Additional equipment and manpower were called in, including a fire truck, Rescue 141 and Tower 541, to aid in the “confined space rescue” explained the Town of Vernon Fire Department on their Facebook page.

Emergency personnel, concerned about the hot temperatures, which reached into the 90s, supplied the patient with oxygen who was in “extreme discomfort.” Crews also set up ventilation to help cool the space where the man was stuck.

In order to free the man, “Tower 541 set up adjacent to the playground on the grass and used the aerial ladder as a high point to stabilize the section of slide the firefighters were removing to reach the patient,” the fire department explained.

Within 30 minutes, the calamity-stricken man was removed from the tube. The person, who has not been identified, was evaluated on the scene but refused treatment and transport to the emergency room.

One would hope that he learned a valuable lesson on why you should pay attention to signs indicating the recommended age for playground equipment.
