Known as the Venice of the North’, Bruges/Brugge is one of Belgium’s most popular tourist destinations with the city offering something for every travellers taste.

The entire historic city center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and walking its cobbled streets truly feels like stepping back in time.

Unlike many European cities that suffered significant damage during wars, Bruges retains much of its original medieval charm and the city’s rich history is reflected in its numerous museums and historical sites.

The Belgium city is also famous for its culinary treats, and Bruges is no exception with over 50 chocolate workshops and museums it’s a paradise for chocolate lovers.

The historic center of Bruges is largely pedestrianized, making it ideal for exploring on foot but an issue has developed in the city with tourists stealing pieces of the famous cobblestones.

Stone thiefs

City councillor Franky Demon recently announced that iconic local spots like Vismarkt, Minnewater, the Grand Palace and the Grutthuse Museum are apparently losing between 50 and 70 cobblestones each month.

‘We ask for nothing but respect. Walking in Bruges means treading on centuries of history,’ said the councillor, according to The Brussels Times, ‘Please leave these stones where they belong.’

‘The cost of repairing the missing pieces costs around €200 per square metre’, Demon added.
