It is election day in Mexico, and not only those within the nation’s borders can vote. Abroad, specifically in 23 cities, Mexico’s election authorities committed to inclusivity and democracy, installed modules so that people outside of Mexico could participate in the elections in person. This is a testament to the government’s dedication to ensuring that every eligible Mexican citizen has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.

For the first time in history, Mexican citizens could vote in person abroad during a federal election. The process was simple: they had to visit the designated voting location in their city, present their Mexican passport, and cast their vote. Specifically, these locations were in 20 cities in the United States, one in Canada, one in Paris, and one in Madrid.

Cities abroad where you can vote

  • United States: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New Brunswick, New York, Oklahoma, Orlando, Phoenix, Raleigh, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Ana, Seattle, Washington DC.

  • Europe: Paris and Madrid.

From the crack of dawn, social media platforms were inundated with images of our fellow citizens patiently queuing up to cast their votes in Paris and Madrid. The sight of these long queues in these two European cities was a powerful testament to the unwavering dedication and commitment of these voters, who were determined to make their voices heard. According to data from the Mexican government, 258,000 people residing abroad were eligible to vote, of which 223,000 registered.

The scenes from the streets are lively and show that when given a chance, citizens living abroad will use the opportunity to make their voices heard. After the results announced it will be interesting to examine if the votes from those abroad differ from the averages seen within the country.
