This is how the Illinois minimum wage will increase in 2024
Illinois workers who earn the minimum wage will see larger paychecks in 2024. Here’s how much the increase will be and when the new pay floor takes effect.
The District of Columbia and 30 states in the country, including Illinois, have a higher minimum wage than the one set by the federal government.
In United States, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 dollars per hour. This base salary was implemented in 2009, so it has not increased in around 14 years, marking the longest period without an increase since a pay floor was created in 1938.
Although the federal minimum wage has remained unchanged for more than a decade, 30 states and DC have established higher base wages. Some link their increases to the cost of living to keep up with inflation, while others have legislation that establishes automatic increases at the beginning or during the year.
This is how the Illinois minimum wage will increase in 2024
Currently, the standard minimum wage in Illinois is $13 per hour for workers over 18 years of age and $10.50 per hour for workers under 18 years of age.
On the other hand, tipped workers receive 60% of the state minimum wage or $7.80 per hour for workers 18 years of age and older, and $6.30 per hour for workers under 18 years of age.

In February 2019, legislation was passed to increase the minimum wage in Illinois to $9.25 per hour on January 1, 2020; $10 per hour six months later; $11 per hour on January 1, 2021; $12 per hour on January 1, 2022; and $13 per hour on January 1 of this year.
As for next year, the legislation requires that the minimum wage increase to $14 on January 1, 2024. Furthermore, it dictates an increase to $15 by January 2025.
The minimum wage in Chicago
It is worth mentioning that the minimum wage in the city of Chicago is higher than in the rest of the state. This year, the minimum wage for Chicago is $15.40 per hour for businesses with 21 or more employees, $14.50 per hour for businesses with up to 20 employees, and $12 per hour for workers under 18 years old.
In Chicago, tipped workers, the minimum wage is $9.24 per hour for businesses with 21 or more workers, $8.70 per hour for businesses with up to 20 employees, and $7.20 per hour for employees under 18 years of age.
