There are some coins that can be worth thousands of dollars if they meet certain characteristics. In the United States, there is a one-dollar coin worth more than $13,000. We explain how to identify if you have one.

According to the US First Exchange portal, the value of a coin is determined based on three main factors: rarity, the condition of the coin or bill, and demand.

If a coin is “rare,” meaning it has some details that most coins don’t, it will be worth more money. If a coin is not only rare but also in good condition, its value will be even higher. On the other hand, if it is rare and in good condition and there are few copies, but there is an elevated demand, a coin will be worth much more.

The Eisenhower $1 coin was issued by the United States Mint between 1971 and 1978. This coin depicted President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Because it was so large and cumbersome, it failed to gain wide circulation and was withdrawn from the market. Here are its characteristics.

The obverse of the coin features a portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as the words and phrases: LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 1971. It also includes the mint mark, which indicates where the coin was produced. For example, D or S indicates that it was minted at the Denver or San Francisco Mint.

On the other hand, the reverse shows an image of an eagle landing on the moon with the Earth in the background, as well as the phrases UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.

As for why it can be worth thousands of dollars, you need to find an example that does not have a mint mark, D or S. This means it was produced at the Philadelphia Mint.

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) offers an estimate of what this coin with this “error” could be worth. A very good example could be worth $13,500.

If you think you have these or other coins that may meet the criteria of rarity, good condition and low demand, you can go to a pawn shop where they might give you something in exchange. You can also look for specialized Facebook groups, check eBay or the Professional Coin Grading Service website.
