Update:

On Monday, oil giant bp announced that it had discovered a reserve thought to hold natural gas and petroleum, located “at the Far South prospect in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of America,” which most countries recognize as the Gulf of Mexico. The company has changed all its internal and external communications to align with President Donald Trump’s name change to the body of water.

The well drilled by bp to evaluate the status of the reserve is located “approximately 120 miles off the coast of Louisiana,” with the company drilling down more than 23,000 feet to access the energy resources found in the “Far South,” an area bp owns jointly with Chevron.

bp plans to increase production in the Gulf of Mexico by 2030

Vice Presidnet of Canada and the Gulf of America, Andy Krieger said that the body of water “remains an area of incredible growth and opportunity for bp” and with drilling capabilities at the levels reached, this latest discovery is just the beginning. Though the company did not know if there were “commercially viable” amounts of petroleum located in the area, their bid to control the extraction of the possible resources shows that they were, at least, somewhat confident.

Company leaders hope to produce 400,000 barrels of oil a day from the Gulf of Mexico by 2030. Last year, Manufacturing Today, an online outlet, reported that bp produced around 300,000 barrels of oil a day in the Gulf.

The press release detailing the discovery did not mention any commitments to reducing emissions in other areas to offset those added by the Gulf of Mexico expansion.

Furthermore, bp failed to address or mention any additional efforts to prevent the sort of environmental catastrophe the company has been responsible for, produced around 300,000 barrels of oil daily.
