This is one of the most valuable variations: A “ladder” serial number, either ascending (12345678) or descending (87654321). If you notice that your banknotes have this peculiar characteristic, you can increase their value by putting them up for sale, since collectors on eBay are willing to pay up to $6,000 for this rarity.
However, finding one of these notes is a matter of real luck, as the site Variety & Errors notes that a “true ladder in its purest form is only printed once for every 96 million notes in a standard print run.”

Other bills worth thousands of dollars
There are also the famous “near stairs”, which are those where the direct staircase is broken by a digit, for example 123495678. The variation also applies in descent, as in 876954321. These types of copies are sold online for around nine dollars, however, there are collectors who are willing to pay thousands of dollars for them.
According to Variety & Errors, there are other variations on serial numbers that can land you a small fortune:
- Low or High Serial Numbers: Those below 1000 or 100, for example 00000100, can sell for $300. In the case of highs it would be 99999900, or something similar. Of course, there are exceptions: A serial number 00000001 could be worth up to $15,000.
- Binaries: Those in which the serial number is made up of only two different numbers, can be worth up to $800 dollars. For example: 29299299
- Solid: Bills with a solid digit in their serial number can be worth up to $500. For example: 55555555
