Thought it was a delivery: It was a giant snake that rang the doorbell instead

A Texas woman got the fright of her life after hearing a motion alert from her doorbell camera. A long, slippery visitor was slinking around in her mailbox.

Update:

Anna, a resident of Cypress, Texas, wasn’t expecting any mail, deliveries or social visits so she was a little taken aback when her doorbell rang completely out of the blue.

Slithery delivery

A surprise that turned into a shock. “I got a motion alert from my doorbell and was shocked to see a wild chicken snake slithering down my wall - something I’d never seen before,” Anna told home security firm Ring.

The doorbell video footage shows the reptile, slithering around inside a wire mailbox, on the front porch.

“It was the first time catching this on video, and honestly, it gave me chills. I watched it live right after the notification and couldn’t believe it,” Anna said, who was prompted to share the video with other Ring clients by her husband.

Is a chicken snake bite poisonous?

While the sight of a snake at your front door is a bit off-putting, chicken snakes (Spilotes pullatus to give it its scientific name) are quite common in Texas, are harmless, nonvenomous don’t attack humans and according to some, are actually quite useful to have hanging around your garden.

Also known as the yellow rat snake and tropical chicken snake, their favorite snack is any kind of rodent - they feed on rats and mice, so while a little scary and not particularly friendly, these slippery serpents keep other pests away.
