Update:

The Supreme Court says it will weigh in on TikTok’s challenge to the new law that would lead to banning the app in the United States.

The social media giant has been under pressure since Congress approved and President Joe Biden signed a law earlier this year requiring the app’s parent company, Beijing-based ByteDance, to sell the platform or be banned from the country.

Supporters of the legislation argue that TikTok presents a national security threat, expressing worries the Chinese government could use the platform to spy on Americans.

TikTok executives and users for their part say banning the app is a violation of the First Amendment.

TikTok ban in the US: These are the key dates of the process that could ban the app in the country

TikTok has asked the Supreme Court to freeze the law that requires the company to be sold to a new, non-Chinese owner.

As the bill currently stands, if the sale does not push through by Jan. 19, 2025, the app will be banned from the country.

The high court has agreed to hear arguments on Jan. 10, 2025, with the proceedings expedited to give justices time to deliberate on TikTok’s appeal before the law takes effect on Jan. 19.

The body has ordered the Justice Department and TikTok’s legal team to make their case on whether the law banning the platform is a violation of the First Amendment.

If the Supreme court decides not to take action on the appeal, the ban will be enforced a day before Donald Trump’s inauguration into the White House on Jan. 20, 2025.
