Tim Walz - JD Vance VP debate: Will mics be muted while the other candidate talks?
During the presidential debate, the microphone of one candidate was muted while the other spoke. The vice presidential debate will have different rules.
Political debates tend to get heated and are potentially inflammatory, which is why there was no studio audience during the presidential debate between President Joe Biden and Donald Trump on CNN and the one between the former president and Vice President Kamala Harris on ABC.
There will also be no audience present in the studio during the vice-presidential debate between Democratic candidate Tim Walz and Republican bet JD Vance.
One other rule in place during the two presidential debates was that microphones were muted until it was a candidate’s turn to speak.
For the vice-presidential face off, this other rule will be different.

CBS News will be hosting the vice presidential debate on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. ET. In a departure from this electoral season’s past two debates, the network has announced that it will not be muting the microphone of candidates when it is not their turn to speak.
However, the media company has clarified that it reserves the right the switch off the candidates’ microphones if they decide there is a need to do so.
The event is likely to be the first and last opportunity for Vance and Walz to come face-to-face before the presidential elections are held on Nov. 5.
