Barbecuing is a long-standing American tradition, and an integral part of celebrations with friends and family, especially during summer holidays. Memorial Day, being the unofficial start of summer, fits well into this practice.

Having a gathering with loved ones is a great way to spend your free day, but it can strain the budget, especially after having to cope with high prices that the country has been facing the past couple of years. But, if you plan things right, you can still have a get-together without overwhelming your pocket too much.

Consider potluck style

Since you’re the host, you could take care of the main event, like the hamburgers. You could then ask guests to bring fixings, a side dish, dessert, or drinks to share the cost.

Simplifying the food you will serve will keep costs down. Focus on less expensive items like hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken instead of pricier meats like steaks and ribs. Make your own side dishes like pasta salad, coleslaw, and baked beans instead of buying pre-made ones.

Grill more items at once to save on fuel, and use a lid to retain heat and cook more efficiently. Prepare some dishes that don’t require cooking, such as salads, to save on energy costs.
