By now, it should come as no surprise that AI (artificial intelligence) is here to stay. Just a few years ago, tools like these still felt like something out of the future. Today, however, they are fully established and used in all kinds of settings, both personally and professionally.

Even so, millions of people still are not entirely sure how they should use AI. That is why more experienced users often spend time sharing guidance and best practices. For example, what are the most common mistakes people make when using ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or other chatbots?

Tom Hewitson, an AI expert and educator, recently explained what he sees as the biggest issue for many users: the way they understand how these tools work. In an article published by The Guardian, Hewitson says many people make the mistake of treating ChatGPT, Copilot, Grok, or Gemini as if they were flawless systems capable of solving problems perfectly.

He argues that many users receive an answer they were not expecting and then react in one of two very different ways. Some decide AI is useless and stop using it altogether, while others immediately believe everything the chatbot tells them, assuming artificial intelligence cannot be wrong. In reality, both reactions are misguided.

Treat AI More like a human conversation

Hewitson explains that the first thing to keep in mind is that a chatbot summarizes information that already exists. Because of that, AI can repeat a piece of information that someone else originally published incorrectly.

For that reason, he says the best approach is almost the same one we use when dealing with another person: try asking the same question in different ways, make your request clearer and more concise, and, ultimately, have an actual conversation with the AI. That back-and-forth makes it easier to verify information and get more accurate answers.
