Tornado watch in Texas and Louisiana: What areas are affected areas and how long will it last?

The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for areas of Texas as severe weather moves through the south of the country also extending to parts of Louisiana.

“A tornado watch was issued for parts of Louisiana and Texas until 9:00 p.m. CST,” reads a warning from the NWS via social media. Among the areas under alert in the Lone Star State are Huntsville, Houston, Conroe and Texas City, while in Louisiana, the alert includes Lafayette, Franklin and Lake Charles.

While much of the state is under alert, there are other areas where the danger has increased, putting parts such as Onalaska, Corrigan, Cedar Point under tornado warning. In addition, Onalaska, Point Blank and Cedar Point also have a warning for severe storms.

A tornado watch is declared when conditions exist which are likely to result in a tornado forming. These can cover areas as small as cities to multiple states.

A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. A warning means that it is time to take action because there is imminent danger to life and property.

What to do during a tornado warning?

To protect your well-being, authorities advise staying sheltered inside your home and finding a safe place, either in a basement or in a room inside that you can address quickly if the phenomenon occurs.

It is crucial to stay away from windows and try to have as much protection as possible around you. If you still have time, it is recommended to take additional precautions, such as securing or protecting vehicles and personal property outside that may be affected.
