“Translating” cats is no longer science fiction: this AI is doing it in real time
A new AI system claims to decode cat meows into 40 distinct categories, providing real-time translations to help owners better understand their feline companions.

Are you on a quest for innovative ways to decode your cat’s behavior? You might be in luck—one scientist believes he’s cracked the elusive code of feline communication using the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
In a recent study, Dr. Vlad Reznikov, founder and CEO of Pattern of USA, claims to have classified the wide range of cat sounds into an impressive 40 distinct categories using his advanced FGC2.3 system. FGC stands for Feline Glossary Classification, and the version presented in the study is 2.3.
Dr. Vlad Reznikov’s work may sound very appealing to those seeking new insights into what their cat’s vocalizations truly mean, promising to deepen their understanding of their cat’s unique voices and emotions.
Described by Reznikov’s company as “a comprehensive taxonomy of cat vocalizations,” the system assigns a unique code to each sound. Using machine learning, he trained an AI to accurately interpret these vocalizations. With a small microphone device connected to the AI, Reznikov says cats could one day communicate with their owners in real time.
What sort of sounds are included in the database?
The FGC2.3 system organizes cat sounds into five broad categories: food-related calls, life event signals, fight and defensive sounds, mating and reproductive calls, and complaint/distress vocalizations. Through an app developed by Pattern of USA, cat owners would see their pet’s meows translated into English, revealing what their furry friend is trying to say.
