Truck driver is left dangling over a 100-meter cliff, supported only by his own trailer: the reason is unexpected

A truck driver in China had a very lucky escape after driving his vehicle off the edge of a collapsed bridge on Tuesday morning.

The incident was captured on film by an onlooker who came to help the stricken man as his cab dangled over the edge of the bridge in the Guizhou province in southern China. ‘Monkey River’ bridge had apparently collapsed after heavy rainfall in the region and the truck had nearly been driven off.

The New York Post reports that the driver was rescued when firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to secure him with a rope. He was then directed to safety, crawling back along the vehicle and only the remains of the bridge.

The incident was also reported by the Guizhou fire service, who confirmed that the dramatic rescue attempt had been successful.

It read: “At 7:40am on June 24, the Houzihe Bridge on the Xiarong Expressway collapsed due to a landslide caused by continuous heavy rain... [We] immediately dispatched 23 vehicles and 89 people to the scene for rescue. There were no casualties at the scene.”

The Guizhou region is currently experiencing the worst floods in at least 30 years as the east Asian summer monsoon season reaches a peak. Across the region multiple rivers burst their banks this week and meteorologists have warned that more are to come as a series of overlapping storms batter the region.

In recent days more than 80,000 people in Guizhou have been evacuated and there could be more to come. This truck driver had a lucky escape but there will be real concern about the millions more who are at danger because of these historic floods.
