The Secret Service’s mettle was put to the test on Saturday during a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Just minutes into the former president’s speech a series of loud popping noises were heard. Trump reached for his right ear as the sound of the first shot made itself heard which was followed by two more.

After the first shots, Trump dropped down to the stage floor as Secret Service agents rushed to cover him yelling for him to get down. The first volley was followed by several more, perhaps five, in quick succession before the shooting stopped. It was all over in less than ten seconds.

How long did it take the Secret Service to get Trump to safety?

Trump’s protection detail moved swiftly once the coast was clear to help the Republican presidential candidate to his feet, keeping him surrounded while they escorted him quickly off stage. Within a matter of minutes, they had gotten him to his motorcade and whisked him away from the venue.

Video posted on social media showed his motorcade racing down the road as the Secret Service carried Trump to safety. He was taken to a nearby medical facility were he was treated.

When he rose after the gunfire, he had blood on his face and a visible wound on his ear, which had been grazed by a bullet. A Secret Service spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi, said in a statement soon after that Trump was “safe”. His son, Don Jr. said in a statement that he had spoken by phone with his father and that he was “in good spirits.”
