Two fishermen make astonishing shark discovery: “It looked like an alien”
In Costa Rica a rare orange nurse shark has stunned experts who believe it is the first of its kind to be officially identified.

Fishermen off the coast of Barra de Parismina in Limón, Costa Rica made an extraordinary discovery when they spotted a two-meter-long nurse shark unlike any they had ever seen before.
The shark stunned locals and scientists alike with its bright orange skin and unusual white eyes, features that experts believe may be the result of genetic mutations. According to reports, the shark was caught by sport fishermen who initially struggled with its immense strength.
“It was incredible,” said fisherman Garvin Watson, who described the experience to USA Today. “We couldn’t believe what we had in front of us, an orange shark that looked like an alien.”
The nurse shark is a common species in warm Atlantic and Pacific waters and they are typically known for their calm nature. But this specimen’s striking coloration and appearance immediately caught the attention of the scientific community.
Marine biologists say the shark’s orange color could stem from a genetic mutation, pigmentation disorder or a rare form of albinism or leucism. Further study will be required to determine the exact cause. Experts are also eager to find out whether this is an isolated case or if more orange-colored sharks may exist along Costa Rica’s coastline.
The discovery adds to Costa Rica’s reputation as one of the most biodiverse marine environments in the world. For local fishermen, it was a once-in-a-lifetime catch but it may open the door to new research on how environmental factors and genetics affect marine species.
