Understanding Supplemental Security Income and the basic requirements to receive monthly payments
There are over 7.3 million recipients of this Social Security Administration in the United States that provides economic aid to adults and children.
The Social Security Administration manages millions of payments to beneficiaries each month from funds they’ve contributed through their taxes on their earnings. These provide money to retirees, survivors and those who are disabled.
But the agency also oversees payments to other children and adults who are disabled and have limited income and resources. This program is known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and over 7.3 million Americans benefit from this financial help.
Who qualifies for Supplemental Security Income?
According to the Social Security Administration, certain adults and children who are disabled, blind, or at least age 65, might be eligible for SSI payments if they have little or no income as well as little or no resources.
They must be U.S. citizens and reside in one of the 50 states, Washington D.C, or the Northern Mariana Islands.
For those under the age of 65, the disability must be a mental or physical condition that seriously limits the person’s daily activities for a period of 12 months or more, or that can be expected to result in death.
When are monthly payments sent?
SSI payments are sent on the first day of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or a holiday. In that case the payment is moved forward to the nearest day that banks will be open to perform transactions.
How to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
You can start your SSI application process online only if you are an adult with a disability. SSI applications are not available online for people under 18 with a disability or people over 65 without a disability.
These individuals must make an appointment to visit their local Social Security office. The appointment can be made by calling 1-800-772-1213 or TTY 1-800-325-0778 between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time from Monday through Friday, or online.
