New York City was the epicenter of the covid-19 pandemic when it crashed ashore in the spring of 2020. Restrictions to stop the spread of the devastating virus saw unemployment spike with businesses shuttered and the flow of tourists drying up.

Two years on, and the city is open for business once again with the majority of pandemic restrictions now lifted and the economy is rebounding. Still not quite where it was before the pandemic yet, and the lasting effects of remote working will need to be addressed.

Who’s hiring in New York City?

Unemployment in New York City has dropped considerably in the past year, now at 6.5 percent in March, nearly two points higher than the rest of the state. A reversal from before the pandemic when the rate was lower in the city than the average around the state. Much of this could be put down to office workers not returning to the city with many companies allowing their workers to come in to the office when they want, or even remote work from anywhere in the nation never having to step foot in the office.

The biggest employment gains for New York City over the past year have been in the leisure and hospitality sector which was heavily battered by the pandemic. Going forward these jobs will depend on tourism rebounding and commuters returning to the city to increase the cash injections they provide to the economy. The latter’s share is predicted to drop by over half to less than $7,000 annually.

The second largest gains have been in professional and business services, followed by education and health sectors, as well as trade, transportation, and utilities. The lowest gains were made in manufacturing and financial activities.
