Exit poll: voters prefer chance for legalization to deportation

Immigration is one of the key issues this election, and according to Fox’s exit poll on the national level, majority of voters (56%) prefer that immigrants be given a chance to obtain legal status to resorting to deportation.

Exit poll: violence asked and expected

The fact that CBS News' exit poll asked voters specifically about the prospect of violence related to the US presidential election should concern everyone, no matter what part of the political spectrum you sit on.

This is the first time in history, which dates back to the 1970s, that it was even felt needed to ask.

And around 70% of voters questioned do expect said political violence. That figure applies to Republicans and Democrats.

Exit poll: economy tops it for Fox

Fox News has issued its first exit poll in which voters said their top issues were the economy (39%), immigration (20%) and abortion (11%).

Exit poll: democracy, economy, abortion

We knew they were going to be important topics and the candidates targeted their messaging appropriately (or not, in some cases) throughout the campaign.

While NBC have a Georgia exit poll showing 62%-35% in favour of abortion being legal, CNN also share their numbers that the top three issues were, in order, democracy, economy, abortion

Americans "dissatisfied"

While I'll continue to repeat that this is early exit poll data, the expected "dissatisfaction" and "anger" is being pulled through from voters.

Chris Wallace says it would be "a miracle" if Harris wins "with that kind of headwind," adding that it "would be a remarkable job."

Exit poll: NBC has Trump ahead in NC

According to an exit poll by NBC News, Donald Trump holds a lead of 51% over Kamala Harris's 47% in North Carolina, another one of the key battleground states we've talked about.

Exit poll: CNN has Harris leading in MI, WI and PA

According to early exit polls reported by CNN, Kamala Harris holds a lead in three key swing states:

Michigan: Kamala Harris 61% – 35% Donald Trump

Wisconsin: Kamala Harris 60% – 38% Donald Trump

Pennsylvania: Kamala Harris 57% – 40% Donald Trump

These figures suggest a significant advantage for Harris in these pivotal states. However, it's important to note that exit polls are preliminary and may not fully represent the final vote counts. Official results will be confirmed as all ballots are counted.

Why Pennsylvania is so important to the Harris-Walz campaign

Talking of the swing states, there is one in particular that political scientist, lawyer, and US elections expert, Dr David Schultz, believes is critical for Vice President Harris to take.

If she “can’t win Pennsylvania, her math gets much more complicated,” he said as part of our interview with him.

Swing states: when to expect a result in 2024

Thanks to some excellent work at the NYT, the following provides a decent guide to when we may be able to paint a clearer picture of the battleground states:

Georgia: Fast count, typically. 94% of votes counted by midnight in 2022; watch the margins for early clues.

North Carolina: Quick results with new counting rules, though initial votes may take a bit longer.

Pennsylvania: Likely to take beyond election night. Improved from 54% counted by midnight in 2020 to 87% in 2022.

Michigan: Could be faster this time; only 51% counted by midnight in 2020, but reforms may speed it up.

Wisconsin: Expect most counts by Wednesday. Progressed from 71% in 2020 to 86% by midnight in 2022.

Arizona: May take several days; mail-in ballots require time to process.

Nevada: Also could take days. Postmarked ballots accepted up to four days post-election, though new tech might help speed things up.
