Beyonce fires up Kamala

Superstar singer Beyonce, who was born in Houston, fired up the crowd at Friday's rally by introducing Harris, who came on stage to a recording of Beyonce's song "Freedom," which has made her campaign anthem. She did not sing however.

Harris spoke about the danger former President Trump and Republicans could present to abortion rights across the country if he's elected, a campaign source said, and be joined by women who have suffered after Texas' anti-abortion regulations were passed and their family members.

"Texas, what is happening across this state and our country is a health care crisis, and Donald Trump is the architect of it," Harris said.

Trump in Texas

Trump was campaigning in Texas on Friday, making a stop in Austin to record an episode of "The Joe Rogan Experience," a popular podcaster with tens of millions of social media followers, most of them men.

After a three-hour interview with Rogan in Texas, Trump arrived late to a rally in battleground state Michigan.

"We've got a war going and she's out partying," Trump said Friday night, a reference to Israel's attacks on Iran.

In his interview with Rogan, Trump again suggested he favored eliminating income tax and replacing the lost revenue with tariffs.

"Did you just float out the idea of getting rid of income taxes and replacing it with tariffs? Are we serious about that," Rogan asked.

"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Trump replied.

State judges dismiss Republican lawsuits challenging overseas votes

Michigan and North Carolina judges have dismissed Republican lawsuits challenging the legitimacy of overseas votes. This suit affects members of the U.S. military who are deployed abroad.

Around 1.6 million U.S. overseas voters are eligible to vote in one of the seven battleground states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. This number could determine the outcome of the election.

There are approximately 4.4 million Americans living overseas, and about 2.8 of them are of voting age. Citizens living abroad can cast their ballots absentee, in some cases even if they have never lived in the United States.

This right to vote is thanks to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act of 1986, which allows military members, their eligible families, and other overseas citizens to vote in absentia in federal elections.

As expected, it is more complicated for Americans living abroad to vote than those living in the United States. They have to update their voter registration and explicitly request an absentee ballot. Read more.

The polls show a close race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. Both candidates have an interest in the polls remaining close as they use those numbers to mobilize their respective bases. If the polls showed a knockout in one direction or another, the side projected to lose could see their votes fall off even more if they felt it was a lost cause. Similarly, the campaign trouncing in the polls could see voters stay home, thinking a victory is secure without them casting a ballot.Read our full coverage for details on which polls got it right in 2020 by accounting for shifts in the intentions of the electorate.

Marist College releases final polls

Marist College has released its last polls for Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina, with less than two weeks until the election. All of the races are within the margin of error, meaning pollsters were not able to say that one candidate had a real lead.

Marist found that Donald Trump led Kamala Harris 50-49 percent in Arizona. It is anyone's race. However, the voters will also elect a new senator, and in that race, Congressman Ruben Gallego is outperforming Harris, leading Kari Lake by 53 - 45 percent.

In Georgia, the two candidates were tied with 49 percent of the vote each.

In North Carolina, pollsters found Donald Trump leading Kamala Harris 50-48 percent.

Marijuana legalization has increasing bipartisan support in the United States. While more than a third of states have legalized the drug recreationally or medically, it remains a Schedule I (the highest and most dangerous categorization) drug at the federal level. Other Schedule 1 drugs include meth and heroin.

Most Democratic leaders have been supporters of legalization or, at a minimum, decriminalization, meaning that no one should be behind bars for consumption. Different states have taken different approaches to the question of legalization, with some enacting laws that benefit the communities that were targets of the war on drugs.

These laws are an attempt at correcting past injustices as lawmakers admit that the harsh policing surrounding marijuana that was common practice for decades destroyed the lives of individuals, families, and communitiesRead more.

Kamala Harris has not made Social Security a pillar of her campaign. Instead, the Democratic nominee has focused on abortion rights, immigration, and what she calls the creation of an “opportunity economy.”

This year, the Social Security Administration announced that the COLA (Cost-of-living Adjustment) offered to beneficiaries of the programs it oversees will see their benefits increase by 2.5 percent in 2025. The COLA offered this year was 3.2 percent; in 2023, it reached 8.7 percent. While prices are still increasing, the pace at which they are rising has slowed, leading to a lower COLA for 2025.

Following the 2016 elections, Donald Trump became president of the United States, a position he held from 2017 to 2021. During those years, he promoted new measures such as tax reform, the management of international relations and the centerpiece of his platform, the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico.

This last project was one of the most controversial during his presidency, and even after being replaced by President Joe Biden, he continued to insist on the need to finish the wall. VP Harris has softened her position on the wall, which could revive the debate over its efficacy and whether or not it should be built. Read more

Europe seeks to underpin Russia sanctions, fearing Trump overhaul

European diplomats are preparing to underpin sanctions on Russia anticipating that a return of former U.S. president Donald Trump could undermine Western efforts to isolate Moscow.

The talks among EU officials and envoys are centered on several initiatives to ensure that European sanctions would remain in place longer term, bolstering them through tighter enforcement, even if Washington changes tack.

The possible steps include "catch-all" clauses to identify and stop suspect goods shipments destined for Russia and wider oil shipping curbs.

Musk sends more money to back Trump

Elon Musk gave about $44 million to his pro-Donald Trump spending group during the first half of October, federal disclosures showed on Thursday, as the billionaire stepped up his efforts for the Republican candidate in the Nov. 5 election.

The contributions, disclosed in a filing to the Federal Election Commission by Musk's America PAC group, come after a prior report showed he gave the group around $75 million over three months between July and September.

America PAC, which is focused on turning out voters in closely contested states that could decide the election, also disclosed spending more than $47 million in the first half of October.

The Trump campaign is broadly reliant on outside groups for canvassing voters, meaning the super PAC founded by Musk - the world's richest man - plays an outsized role in what is expected to be a razor-thin election between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
