The next holiday will be celebrated in May with Memorial Day. This day is celebrated on the last Monday of May, so this year, it will be observed on Monday, May 27. This day honors those who died serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Originally, Memorial Day only honored those who died in the Civil War, but this changed after the First World War. Since then, the day celebrates all those who have died serving their country in combat. In 1971, the United States Congress declared the last Monday in May a federal holiday.

By law, non-essential federal offices must close during these holidays, so government employees have the day off and receive their pay. However, other establishments, such as schools, companies, banks and supermarkets, decide whether to close.

Generally, on Memorial Day, banks, post offices, stock exchanges and schools stop operations, but pharmacies and restaurants remain open. In the case of supermarkets, some are open, while others, like Costco, are closed.
