US Politics: House Ethics to investigate GOP Rep. Cawthorn over cryptocurrency, relationship with staffer
The scandal-strewn congressman is in hot water again as Congress is investigating him for several breaches of his office including an improper relationship.
The House Ethics Committee has announced that they are commencing an investigation into Rep. Madison Cawthorn for multiple issues including insider trading and an improper relationship with an aide.
“The Investigative Subcommittee shall have jurisdiction to determine whether Representative Madison Cawthorn may have: improperly promoted a cryptocurrency in which he may have had an undisclosed financial interest, and engaged in an improper relationship with an individual employed on his congressional staff,” the statement from the Committee on Ethics reads.
Cawthorn is fresh off a bruising defeat in his Republican primary last week, meaning he cannot run for a second term.
When he was first voted into Congress he was the youngest member of the House of Representatives and thought to be a future star for the GOP. However, his time on Capitol Hill has been marred by a number of high-profile scandals, the most recent of which being him bringing a loaded gun onto a plane.
Before he made it into Congress, Cawthorn was accused of sexual misconduct and sexual assault. The accusations followed him along the campaign trail and were taken up by Buzzfeed which published an investigation into his actions. He also revealed in an interview earlier this year that he had seen members of Congress consuming cocaine as well as inviting him to sex parties. These accusations severely damaged his standing in the GOP.
How has Cawthorn responded?
In a tweet, Cawthorn described his opponents in Congress as “the swamp,” a term used by Donald Trump in his election campaign where he argued Congress was corrupt and needed a shakeup.
Cawthorn’s other tweets in the past week have also focused on these amorphus elites. He took a swipe at Congressional Republicans after his defeat in the primary and has also tweeted his support for Elon Musk, who has also been accused of sexual harrassment in the last week, saying that the attacks were politically motivated.
