US Postal Service in danger of privatization by Donald Trump, how will it affect you?
President-elect Donald Trump has reportedly expressed interest in privatizing the U.S. Postal Service. Find out the possible effects if this takes place.
President-elect Donald Trump is setting his sights on privatizing the United States Postal Service, according to a report by the Washington Post.
After being informed that the USPS incurred a net loss of $9.5 billion for its fiscal year ending in Sept. 30, Trump said the government should no longer subsidize the organization, the report said.

The USPS provides a public service, and this could be adversely affected if the agency were privatized.
The service is self-sustaining and does not rely on taxpayer funding. It generates revenue through its services and products, such as stamps.
Selling the USPS to private investors could result in the loss of a steady revenue stream for the government. If it generates any profit under a company, it would go to private stakeholders instead of being reinvested into public infrastructure or worker benefits.
Privatization would prioritize profit over public service
Privatization could lead to increased prices because private owners would seek to maximize profits rather than operate as a public service.
As a result, fees for standard mail services, such as letter delivery or package shipping, could rise, disproportionately affecting low-income individuals and small businesses.
Private companies would also likely eliminate unprofitable services, such as six-day delivery, affordable shipping for small businesses, or free mail for the blind.
They may stop delivering mail to remote areas, or charge higher rates for the service. The USPS is currently required to serve all addresses in the U.S., no matter how remote, at the same affordable rates.
A profit-driven model may focus on urban and suburban areas which are likely to bring in more money, leaving rural and underserved communities with reduced service, higher costs, or no service at all.
