Update:

That Spain is one of the world’s dream destinations is hardly up for debate. Its cuisine, warm climate and wide cultural and leisure offering make it one of the most visited countries year-round.

While certain regions have long been linked to tourists of specific nationalities, that picture could shift dramatically by 2028. A study by MMGY Global for Turespaña reveals that seven out of ten Americans plan to visit Spain that year. Unsurprisingly, Madrid and Barcelona top the list of desired cities – but they’re far from alone.

Sevilla’s historic charm wins over Americans

Sixty-six percent of those surveyed said they’re eager to visit Seville. The Andalusian capital not only offers a warmer climate than Spain’s two most popular cities but also boasts a deep historical character. Its Plaza de España, La Macarena, Triana district, and passionate blend of religion and soccer make it an irresistible choice – not to mention its proximity to the coast.

Valencia leads for coastal travelers

When it comes to seaside escapes, Valencia takes the lead, drawing interest from 68% of respondents. Most cited the city’s mix of medieval charm and modern urban life as the main reason. Valencia offers a wealth of museums and, of course, the striking City of Arts and Sciences complex, crowned by Europe’s largest aquarium, the Oceanogràfic.

No trip to Spain feels complete without a proper paella – and what better place to try it than its birthplace? That seems to be the thinking among American visitors, much to the relief of other coastal regions such as the increasingly crowded Cantabrian shore.
