Between 1 March and 13 September, voters will take to the polls in state primaries which will determine the candidates that make it to the General Election Ballot in November.

When does each state host its primaries?

In 2022, Texas was the first is the first state to host its primary on 1 March.

All eyes are on the Texas gubernatorial race where incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott will face Democratic rising star Beto O’Rourke, who previously served in the US House of Representatives. This race has become increasingly competitive since the devastating and tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School that left nineteen children and two teachers dead.

A new poll released on 15 June by Quinnipiac University found that the race is tightening. In December, fifty-two percent of voters favored Governor Abbott, but as of early June his lead has fallen by five points to forty-seven percent. When voters were asked about their opinion of Abbott, only forty-six percent they approved of the way he is governing. Around forty-two percent of voters said they would vote for Beto O’Rourke in November, up from thirty-seven in December. While, support has increased, his favorability sits at thirty-eight percent, lower than Abbott’s.
