When will the final results of the 2020 election be announced?

In 2020, the US General Election fell on Tuesday, November 3.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, millions more voters opted to send in a mail-in ballot to avoid the risk of catching the virus at a polling place. Since these ballots cannot be tabulated until election night in many states, with some even barring election officials from opening up the envelopes they are mailed in, the results took longer to come in. The public was warned in advance that this would be the case, but that did not stop then-President Donald Trump from announcing that he had won on election night.

However, the final results did not come in for a few days, and then-candidate Joe Biden did not make a victory speech until Sunday, November 8, nearly a week after voting had ended.

This year, the results should be available a little more quickly, but once again, the results should not be expected on election night. The races are expected to be tight in many key swing states. In 2020, there were several states where the difference between who won came down to several thousand votes and in those cases election officials need to be careful that the count is accurate to ensure the public trusts the outcome.

This is what happens to your mail-in ballot from the moment you drop it off at the post office until it’s counted

Millions of voters will opt to cast their ballots by mail rather than heading to a polling place to vote early or on election day. But what happens to these ballots once they are mailed? Where do they go? Are they counted before election day? How is the chain of custody maintained?

Firstly, all states allow mail-in voting in some capacity. Several states send all voters a ballot that can be returned by mail, others allow voters to request one without providing an excuse, and others will only allow mail-in ballots to be cast by those who require them for a specific reason (i.e., they will be out of the country during the election). While the processes vary from state to state, since these governments have the authority to determine how elections will be run, there are some broad similarities. Read more.
