Veterinary expert explains how dogs choose their favorite person and the signs that indicate they have found one
They may be ‘man’s best friend’, but your pet dog will single out one particular member of the family who they always go to.
It’s not just random affection, dogs will deliberately pick out their “go-to person” in the household. Canine behavior experts explain that there are a number of reasons why your pet dog will single out one member of the family ahead of the rest - the person they trust the most.
It doesn’t mean to say they don’t like the rest of the family - it’s just an instinct for them to latch onto the person with whom have they the contact and interaction with. Dogs love routine, so that means the person who feeds them, take them out for walks, plays with them, and maintains a consistent level of interaction which allows them to earn their trust first.

Keep calm during stressful moments
Dogs respond strongly to emotional stability. They prefer to be close to someone who stays calm during stressful moments, or situations that are new to them. That means placating them, and being a source of comfort if they are disturbed - for example by a loud thunderstorm or trip to the vet’s.
Be aware that dogs are sensitive to is body language and behavior. Gentle gestures, keeping a patient tone, and positive reinforcement make a huge impact. Dogs pick up on subtle cues, and respond to those who communicate clearly and kindly.

Doing things together
And make sure you spend quality time together with you dog - whether taking them with you on your morning jog, trips to the park or cuddles on the couch - all of that will help reinforce the bond between you and the canine member of the family.
Dogs choose their leader not by dominance, but by dependability and emotional connection. They’ll be just as happy to see everyone else but their go-to person, for them, is someone special.
