Poor-performing branches continue to be a problem for Walmart. After closing a total of 23 stores in the United States in 2023, the world’s largest warehouse chain continues with store closures, confirming the shuttering of two more locations in July.

According to official company information, the company had a total of 10,500 branches globally in January 2024, of which 4,622 were located in the U.S. However, in recent months, this figure has dropped to 4,609 locations in the United States, resulting from the closure of 13 stores so far this year.

The two closures in Georgia are in addition to previous branch closures in California (5), Colorado (1), Maryland (1), Ohio (1) and Wisconsin (1). In the Golden State, the closure of branches was recorded in San Diego, El Cajón, West Covina, Granite Bay and Fremont; while the closure in Ohio occurred in Columbus. In Maryland, Walmart shuttered the store in Townson, in Colorado it was in Aurora, and in Wisconsin the closure took place in Milwaukee.

Why will these Walmart branches close?

Like most previous cases, the store closures in Georgia are the result of poor branch performance. The latest move is expected to affect around 400 employees. According to various reports, these workers will continue to receive their normal salary until September 20. After this date, they will be given the option of transferring to the nearest branch or, failing that, the chance to receive severance compensation.
