Warning of a type of cancer that is growing very fast: affects men and women differently
One of the most common forms of cancer is affecting a growing number of people worldwide.
Skin cancer is one of the fastest-growing cancers in recent years, raising major concerns for global health. In this context, the world’s largest independent cancer research organization, Cancer Research UK, reported in 2024 that the number of people affected has never been higher. Due to this rise in cases, several studies have been conducted in England, showing that the disease tends to appear in different parts of the body depending on gender.
There’s a pattern between men and women
According to experts, 9 out of 10 cases of skin cancer are mainly caused by excessive exposure to UV rays from the sun. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 1.5 million people had skin cancer in 2022, and current data shows an average of 330,000 new cases each year. However, this type of cancer affects men and women differently. In women, the cancer is more likely to appear on the lower body, especially the legs and hips. For men, it’s the opposite—it usually appears on the back, chest, and shoulders. Some researchers suggest that daily clothing choices may be a key factor behind these differences.

Sunburns are a major enemy of the skin. According to Cancer Research UK, "Getting sunburned just once a year can triple the risk of developing skin cancer compared to never being sunburned," said Fiona Osgun, a member of the organization.“It’s not just about hot and sunny days—UV rays can be strong enough to damage skin from mid-March to October, even on cloudy days,” noted Hans Christian Wulf, chief physician and dermatology professor who has studied the effects of sun exposure on skin for over 50 years.
