Prices for fuel have reached their peak, so far, of $5.01 a gallon as a US average on June 14. There has been a slight decrease over the last two weeks with the average cost of a gallon sitting around the $4.82 mark. This is partly due to the sheer number of drivers of the road as we enter July fourth weekend. Record numbers are expected to take to the roads to be with family and celebrate.

“Little bouts of relief here and there are going to be common this summer, but we may not also be done with the fireworks yet,” De Haan told USA TODAY.

The AAA Gas Prices website updates the price of fuel every day, showing the overnight price changes at the national and state level. Every day up to 120,000 stations are surveyed in cooperation with WEX Inc for unmatched statistical reliability.

Will there be a tax break for motorists to reduce the cost of gas?

In recent months there have been numerous efforts to bring down the price of gasoline, both at a state and federal level.

States like New York have already suspended their gasoline tax to give drivers a discount, while others are offering a gas tax rebate to help with the inflated cost at the pump. California Governor Gavin Newsom and the State Legislature have reached a tentative deal for the state budget that would send 23 million residents a gas tax rebate potentially worth up to $350.

Nationally, President Biden called on Congress last week to implement a federal gas tax holiday for the next three months. But there has been no action on that proposal nor legislation introduced to deliver US taxpayers a federal gas tax rebate.

Inflation, a key component in the high price of gas, is a major concern and Biden has stated that it is currently his top domestic policy. It remains to be seen if he can bring down prices without risking the economy entering into a recession.
