Though it’s sometimes hard to see past the problems in America, there is still much to celebrate about the country this Independence Day. There are also plenty of ways to keep it improving! The traditional ways of celebrating the 4th of July have included parades, picnics, wearing the colors of the flag, and setting off fireworks and sparklers. (And if you are looking for the best places to watch fireworks near you, we’ve got you covered there, too.) While those are all still good options, here are some alternative options for patriotic and fun ways to celebrate the 4th of July with your friends and family.

1. Visit a historic landmark or national park

Find out about some historic landmarks in your city and pay a visit to one or a few of them. The monuments in America commemorate historic events and natural wonders, and there are some to see in almost every American city. Why not use today to educate yourself about the history of the ones near you?

2. Support indigenous communities

If you’re throwing a party or looking to provide to one, shop at businesses owned by indigenous people or other minor communities who face disadvantages in America, rather than big corporations.

3. Set up a petition at your 4th of July function

There’s no better way to celebrate America’s independence than to encourage a cause you feel passionate about. You can give an extra shot to anyone who signs a petition that works to end gun violence, for example...as incentive.

4. Volunteer

Help fight for gun reform or volunteer to help refugees. Help make America an even safer and welcoming place to live.

5. Have a barbecue or a picnic

Spend quality time with your friends and family and just enjoy the day together with food and music. Pro tip: Avoid plastic ware and deal with the pain of dishes for the sake of helping the environment.

6. Attend a parade

Especially one that marches for a cause you believe in, and not just America being great.

7. Host an American history trivia quiz

Brush up on your American history by hosting a quiz for your friends and family.

8. Take a hike

If you’re in a mountainous or hilly area, get out and enjoy the beauties that America has to offer today.
