What are the best back-to-school movies?

High school movies can bring back memories of being young. Here’s some of the best to take you back in time with a jolt of pure nostalgia.

For most American schoolchildren the summer holidays are now well underway. Many of us have fond memories of summer vacations as a kid, with weeks and weeks of free time to look ahead to and not a care in the world.

In fact, there is a whole genre of movie dedicated in part to the simply joys of being young, but also to the trials and tribulations of teenage life. These back-to-school movies remind us of what it is to be young and how we filled the long summer days.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure

Two teenage friends, high on ambition but lacking slightly on the talent, race against the clock to finish a history project. However the clock their racing isn’t entirely linear and they travel back in time in the name of research.

What do you get when you combine three nerdy friends, the last big party of high school, and the burning desire to obtain enough alcohol to convince their peers that they may someday be popular? One of the most iconic high school movies of all time.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Another unforgettable tale of high school antics comes from this 1986 comedy, following in the wake of the inimitable Ferris Bueller as he enjoys a day away from the confines of the classroom.

School of Rock

Jack Black leads a class of prep school students into a local battle of the bands competition, using the power of rock to inspire his young protégés.

Monsters University

More than a decade after the original Monsters Inc film was released, this prequel takes us back to Sully and Mike’s college days. We see that the two best friends were not always so close and how they came to work at the scare factory.

Matilda

Based on a great children’s book by Roald Dahl, Matilda follows the actions of a gifted young girl as she rebels against an evil principal at her school. It’ll remind you of why you were so relieved to get home from school every evening.

Kindergarten Cop

Arnold Schwarzenegger, seven-time Mr Olympia and former Governor of California, stars in this bizarre comedy-cum-thriller. Arnie plays a burnt-out teacher in a local kindergarten school, who is actually an undercover cop.

10 Things I Hate About You

The late Heath Ledger stars in an updated version of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. This 199 classic hits many of the classic 90s high school movie tropes with dances and romances aplenty.
