Federal prosecutors have filed nine new tax-related criminal cases in California against presidential son Hunter Biden- three of them felony charges and six misdemeanors.

The latest indictment, brought by special counsel David Weiss, charges Biden with tax evasion and falsifying a tax return, among others. According to Weiss’ statement, President Joe Biden’s son “spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills.”

What are the new indictments against Hunter Biden?

The court document charged that Biden “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019.”

A press release issued by Weiss and the Justice Department states that the indictment charges Biden with four counts of failure to pay taxes and two counts of failure to file taxes, adding up to six misdemeanor charges. He also faces two cases of filing a false return and one of tax evasion, which comprise three felony charges.

Biden could face jail time

In the event that Biden is convicted, the statement indicates that he could be slapped with a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison, with a federal district court judge handing out any sentence. The investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

The new allegations come on the heels of federal firearms charges filed in Delaware claiming that Biden violated laws against drug users carrying guns in 2018 when he purchased and kept one for 11 days.

The President’s son has been under investigation for the past five years for not paying taxes and illegal possession of firearms.

The defense team has indicated that they will contest the new tax-related charges, and that they are planning to argue to have the gun allegations dismissed.
