The U.S. passport is one of the most powerful in the world, as it gives its holders owners the privilege of being able to visit many countries without needing a visa.

According to the 2023 Henley Passport Index released by the International Air Transport Association, a United States passport ranks seventh in the world according to the number of destinations its owner can travel to without having to acquire a prior visa.

The U.S. passport is tied with Belgium, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland for seventh place, with citizens allowed to access 186 out of 227 destinations visa-free. This number includes countries that require Electronic Travel Authorization or a visa on arrival.

Japan ranks first among the most powerful passports in the world, with its citizens able to visit 193 countries. Singapore and South Korea are tied for second, with access to 192 nations without a visa, followed by Germany and Spain which both sit at third place with visa-free entry to 190 destinations.

Many Americans are planning their spring and summer trips, and those who don’t have an updated passport may have to wait to book their flights because of the backlog in passport processing that the State Department is currently facing.

Countries US citizens need a travel visa for

Those who are ready with this travel document will have to check if their port of entry requires a visa. Americans can go on a trip to majority of European, Caribbean, and Central and South American countries without one, but there are some places where you have to obtain a visa before you fly.

Travel to Cuba, North Korea, and Syria may not be possible at all, due to restrictions by the U.S. government in the case of the first two countries, and by the Syrian government in the case of the third.
