What did Dave Chapelle say about Elon Musk while the Tesla CEO was onstage with the comedian?

At an event on Sunday night in San Fransisco, Elon Musk was booed when brought on stage by comedian Dave Chapelle. What did Chapelle say?

Dave Chapelle invited Elon Musk to join him on stage at a comedy show in San Fransisco on Sunday and the response from the audience... was less than welcoming.

The Twitter CEO was greeted with boos and some cheers from the audience, which made it difficult for Musk to speak.

The booing lasted nearly ten minutes, a sign that the audience was less than pleased to see Musk, given that had they been interested in hearing him speak, they would have stopped. After the event, Musk has tried to downplay the level to which he was booed, saying, “Technically, it was 90% cheers & 10% boos (except during quiet periods).”

Video evidence provides a different story...

When Chapelle brought Musk on stage, he welcomed him by saying, “Ladies and gentlemen make some noise for the richest man in the world.”

At first, videos posted from the event seem to show a mixed response of cheers and boos.

To which Musk responded, “Weren’t expecting this were you?

However, when the crowd stopped cheering, but the booing persisted, Chapelle joked, “It sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience.”

At times Chapelle tried to jump in to quiet the audience, but most attempts failed, with the comedian at one point saying, “tough road ahead it sounds like.”

The boos continued for ten minutes straight, and at first, Chapelle, trying to defend Elon, made fun of the hecklers saying that the noise was coming from people in bad seats... a strange dig a what would be his poorer fans.

To deflect from the audience’s reaction, the comedian began to poke fun at Elon, saying that he is “not even trying to die on earth.” Chapelle then began to joke that he was interested in heading to Mars with Musk asking, “What kind of pussy they got up there? That’s what we’ll be doing,” and that he wants to start “the first comedy club on Mars.”

Neither joke stopped the booing, which led to a change of tone for Chapelle.

Chapelle turns on Elon... a little

As the booing continued, Elon Musk looked to Chapelle to guide him, asking, “Dave, what should I say?”

Chapelle responded, “Don’t say anything. It’ll only spoil the moment.

Then he went on the attack, saying, “Do you hear that sound, Elon? That’s the sound of pending civil unrest. I can’t wait to see what store you decimate next, motherfucker. You shut the fuck up.”

The audience then began to cheer, and then balancing a cigar, a beer, and the microphone, he exclaimed that was an ally to the crowd and brought the show to a close.

A wake-up call for Chapelle?

Dave Chapelle is no novice to comedy, but it seems unlikely that he realized what sort of response Musk would get in San Fransisco. Perhaps at another venue, the response would have been warmer, but, in all likelihood, Musk and his defenders will chalk the booing up to the political demographics of the city.

After the event, Musk did take to Twitter to say, “The work mind virus is either defeated or nothing else matters.” Exactly what defeating the mind virus entails is unclear, but certainly, Musk believes it is to blame for the treatment he received during Chapelle’s show.
