The word ‘demure’, while it has been around for, give or take, seven hundred years, has taken the internet by storm in recent weeks.

Social media has its newest viral trend, being ‘demure’ and ‘mindful’ in everything that you do. Jools Lebron is the TikTok influencer behind the fad posting a video on August 2 titled ‘How to be demure at workwhich has garnered over 6 million views. Another posted a few days later surpassed that one by more than fivefold.

Since then, the makeup artist has posted several more explaining how to be ‘demure’ as well as ‘mindful’ in everything she does, from putting on her makeup and getting her nails done to ordering and eating her food or boarding an airplane and more. So what does the TikToker mean by being ‘demure’?

The word ‘demure’ has been around for, give or take, seven hundred years, but has changed little over that time according to Merriam-Webster. It’s currently defined as a person being “affectedly modest, reserved or serious: coy” in order to not “draw attention to themselves, whether because of a shy nature or determined self-control.”

In Lebron’s first post she says, “See how I come to work, very demure. I do my makeup. I lay my wig. I do a little braid. I flat iron my hair. I do Chi-Chi bout. I do viral vanilla. Very demure, very mindful. Lets not forget to be demure divas.

In later videos she explains that it is about finding balance “without doing too much or doing too little.” According to Lebron it’s about being mindful when you go to work “It’s not a fashion show, but it’s not a soup kitchen,” she says.

The TikTok sensation has spread across social media sparking memes from other users including celebrities like Meghan Trainor imitating Lebron’s advice on how she comes to work. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan also posted a short video on TikTok about being ‘demure’ and ‘mindful’.
