On Monday, June 14, President Trump, joined by NATO head Mark Rutte, said he was considering imposing 100 percent tariffs on Russian imports to the US. "We are very, very unhappy with [Russia], and we’re going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don’t have a deal in 50 days," said the president from the Oval Office. President Trump followed up his threat saying that he hoped that a ceasefire could be agreed to before the deadline to avoid the punative tariffs.

Before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the country ranked as the United States’ 40th largest export market and 20th largest source of imports. In total, Russia spent around $5.8 billion on US goods—a figure that actually represented a 13.1 percent decrease from 2018 to 2019. Meanwhile, the US imported more than $22.3 billion worth of goods from Russia.
However, in 2024, the total value of trade between the US and Russia reached around $3.5 billion, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative. The US exported approximately $526.1 million in goods to Russia, whereas Russia exported around $3 billion in goods to the US. Exports from both countries fell compared to 2023, with Russian exports to the US falling by more than a third. These data show that the US was operating a $2.5 billion trade deficit with Russia.
