What has Donald Trump said about Tim Walz’s US vice presidential nomination?

Donald Trump was quick to attack Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz after he was announced as Kamala Harris’ running mate. The GOP has struggled to assemble a cohesive strategy to undermine their new Democratic opponents, and the attacks on Walz could be cut, copied, and pasted from those lodged at Democrats in previous gubernatorial, house, and senate races.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Donald Trump described the Harris-Walz ticket as “the most Radical Left duo in American history.”

The policies are popular

Walz was immediately labeled as a far-left progressive socialist and a “dangerous liberal,” with the GOP ticket citing the legislation passed in Minnesota during his tenure in the governor’s mansion. The list includes implementing universal breakfast and lunch programs in public schools so that children don’t go hungry, outlawing non-compete agreements to give workers more power in the labor market, hampering the ability of employers to host captive audience meetings where they were able to load workers with anti-union propaganda, and making the university more accessible to students from low-income backgrounds. While the GOP will point to these policies as bad for Minnesota, they are broadly popular in the state. If you ask voters in other states, the majority will likely tell you they want similar bills approved by their legislatures.

A Data for Progress poll found that a majority of voters from both parties and independents would support a national initiative to provide free breakfast and lunch in public schools. When looking at support for free tuition for four-year colleges for low-income students, a whopping 61 percent of respondents to an Education Next poll said they supported the measure. Unsurprisingly, the support rate was above 70 percent when looking at parents specifically. And while Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, JD Vance, has spoken about the importance of supporting families, the policy proposals as to how they will do so have yet to materialize.

From Senator JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, we have heard attacks on the way Walz handled the uprisings that took place in Minneapolis after the police murder of George Floyd in that city. But again, these attacks are standard and will center on Walz being weak on crime, and only time will tell if those arguments stick in the minds of voters.
