“What I saw was unbelievable”: Three-decade-old disappearance finally solved
In Pakistan, the body of a man who vanished nearly 30 years ago has been found, in near-pristine condition.

The world never ceases to amaze us with its discoveries - long-buried secrets that resurface after years, often tied to the human experience itself. One such revelation has emerged from the remote mountains of northern Pakistan, where the body of a man who vanished 28 years ago has been found preserved in a melting glacier in the Kohistan region.
Body identified as man who vanished in the late 90s
The remains were identified thanks to an ID card found on the body, bearing the name Naseeruddin. That clue allowed police to track down the man’s identity: he had disappeared in June 1997 after reportedly falling into a glacier crevasse during a snowstorm. Remarkably, the body was found in near-pristine condition, as the decomposition of his remains had been halted by the extreme cold of his final resting place.
His discovery, experts say, a chilling testament to how climate change is accelerating glacial melt.
In recent years, Kohistan has experienced a noticeable decline in snowfall. With less snow cover, glaciers are increasingly exposed to direct sunlight, hastening their thaw. The body was discovered by Omar Khan, a local shepherd, who described the moment with awe, telling the BBC: “What I saw was unbelievable. The body was intact. The clothes weren’t even torn.”
Who was Naseeruddin?
Naseeruddin was a local man, a husband and father of two. On the day he disappeared, he was traveling on horseback with his brother, Kathiruddin. According to police, a family dispute had forced the brothers to leave their home. Kathiruddin told the BBC that they arrived in the valley in the morning, and later that day, Naseeruddin entered a cave. When he didn’t return, his brother and other locals searched for him - but he was never found.
