President Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the two oldest presidential candidates in the history of the United States, and as they are only set to grow even older while in office, many are concerned about their mental fitness to lead the country for four years.

Biden, who is 81, said he does not need to take a cognitive test because he has “a cognitive test every day” in his job as president. 78-year-old Trump’s cognition has been called into question in the past, particularly when he exhibited erratic behavior, but he once claimed he “aced” a cognitive test he had taken when he was still president.

What is a cognitive test and what could it reveal about Biden and Trump’s mental condition?

A cognitive test is an assessment designed to measure a person’s mental functions, including memory, attention, language, problem-solving skills, and reasoning.

These tests are commonly used in various settings, including diagnosing and monitoring cognitive impairments, neurological disorders, and other mental conditions.

What are the types of cognitive tests?

These screenings aim to determine the state of different brain functions, which is why there’s a host of tests available.

Memory tests look at short-term memory, where the person performs tasks like recalling a list of words or numbers after a short delay. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for example involves memorizing a short list of words and copying shapes.

The clock drawing test measures spatial and organizational skills by having the person draw a clock showing a specific time.

There are also screenings for long-term memory, where the person is given tasks involving the recall of information or events from the past.

There are also attention and concentration tests, language tests, problem-solving and reasoning tests, as well as naming tests, which assess the ability to name objects or pictures.

Other evaluations measure sustained attention and response inhibition, verbal fluency, and working memory.

What Cognitive Tests Can Reveal

These screenings can reveal different stages of cognitive Impairment. The tests can show if there is mild cognitive impairment or MCI, an early stage of cognitive decline that is more severe than typical age-related changes but not as severe as dementia.

These tests can also provide evidence that a person has dementia. This includes conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, characterized by significant decline in memory and other cognitive functions.

Cognitive tests can also serve as proof of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, as they can reveal difficulties with executive function, attention, and visuo-spatial abilities.

These tests are valuable tools in assessing and diagnosing a wide range of mental and neurological conditions, and can provide detailed insights into a person’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

However, such tests are not the sole determining factor in a candidate’s mental fitness to serve as president.

According to Jamie Reilly, a neuroscience professor at Temple University in Philadelphia, accusing the candidates that they are not mentally fit for office can worsen discrimination against the elderly, and discourage those with neurological concerns from getting the help they need, per USA Today.
