Update:

Parts of the internet were brought to a standstill early Monday morning by a widespread outage affecting Amazon Web Services (AWS).

What is Amazon Web Services?

Amazon Web Services is Amazon’s cloud computing division, providing on-demand computing platforms and APIs to clients that include individuals, companies, banks, and even governments.

While Amazon itself was hit by the issue affecting its subsidiary, many major applications and websites that rely on AWS data centers also went down as a result.

Which apps and websites are affected?

According to Downdetector, a website that tracks real-time online outages, users have reported problems with a wide range of popular apps and platforms, including:

  • Snapchat
  • Zoom
  • Roblox
  • Clash Royale
  • MyFitnessPal
  • Life360
  • Clash of Clans
  • Fortnite
  • Canva
  • Wordle
  • Signal
  • Coinbase
  • Duolingo
  • Slack
  • Smartsheet
  • Pokémon Go
  • Epic Games
  • PlayStation Network
  • Peloton
  • Rocket League

This is not an exhaustive list. The most recent Downdetector update reported that more than 1,000 companies have been affected. So, if you’re having trouble opening apps on your phone or logging into certain websites, there’s a good chance the AWS outage is to blame.

Amazon says recovery is underway

Amazon Web Services said it has “identified a root cause” and is seeing “significant signs of recovery,” suggesting the worst of the issue may now be over.
