The pantheon of shopping days grows ever larger with the passing of the years. While the Friday after Thanksgiving has been dubbed Black Friday and is the official start to the holiday gift buying season, the shopping frenzy now spreads over into the following week. Each day has its own special designation.

For nearly two decades now, the concept of Green Monday has been in place. The term was coined in 2007 by eBay to describe the significant increase in online sales that occurred on the second Monday of December. The idea behind the name ‘Green Monday’ is that the day represents ‘green’ as in money, reflecting the boost in sales for retailers.

Green Monday is on 9 December, 2024 this year.

Is Green Monday important?

The concept of Green Monday is somewhat similar to Cyber Monday, which occurs on the Monday following Thanksgiving in the United States. Both days are associated with online shopping and the holiday retail season.

Green Monday may not be as well-known or significant as major shopping days like Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but it is another opportunity for stores to try and sell unwanted stock. It’s considered an important day for online retailers looking to capitalise on the last-minute holiday shopping rush.
