Black Friday and Cyber Monday have already passed but another shopping day is here. ‘Green Monday’ is on the second Monday of December each year. A few years ago, Black Friday was the shopping day of note but now the sales have spread out, perhaps at a detriment to consumers.

Green Monday, as a term related to online retail and e-commerce, was coined by eBay in 2007 to describe the significant increase in online sales that occurred on the second Monday of December. The idea behind the name ‘Green Monday’ is that the day represents ‘green’ as in money, reflecting the boost in sales for retailers.

Green Monday is on 11 December, 2023 this year.

Is Green Monday important?

The concept of Green Monday is somewhat similar to Cyber Monday, which occurs on the Monday following Thanksgiving in the United States. Both days are associated with online shopping and the holiday retail season.

While Green Monday may not be as well-known or significant as major shopping days like Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but is another opportunity for stores to try and sell unwanted stock. It’s considered an important day for online retailers looking to capitalise on the last-minute holiday shopping rush.
