SmartAsset based their analysis on the 50/30/20 budget (50% of your salary for housing, groceries and transportation, 30% for entertainment and hobbies and 20% for paying off debt, saving or investing), plus the local cost of necessities and taxes to determine the pre-tax salary needed to live comfortably in 99 cities in the United States.
According to the results of the analysis, on average, a person needs $96,500 to live comfortably in a major city in the United States, in addition to paying off debts and investing. On the other hand, a family of two adults and two children needs around $235,000.
