What is the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) and when does it come into effect?
New travel requirements to enter the European Union will take effect in 2025. Are you one of the 1.4 billion people who will be impacted by ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be implemented in 2025, and although there is some time, those hoping to travel to the block should be aware of how it may impact their trip.
According to the European Union, 1.4 billion people from sixty countries will see their visa-except status revoked.
When ETIAS goes into effect, travelers from these countries will be required to obtain authorization for stays under 180 days, which is currently not required.
Exceptions to ETIAS
There are, however, a few cases where a visa for travelers from these countries will not be required. The requirements will be waived for those visiting an EU member state on a school trip, recognized refugees, and members of the armed forces “traveling on NATO or Partnership for Peace business.” In each of these cases there is still specific documentation that will need to be provided at customs and immigration that travelers should be aware of.
The application process
The EU has made the decision to digitize its border, and ETIAS is the pillar of that effort.
To receive authorization to enter an EU member state, travelers will have to fill out an online application that will be cross-checked “with data already stored in other EU systems such as the Schengen Information System (SIS), Visa Information System (VIS) and Entry/Exit System (EES).” The cost associated with submitting the application will be 7 euros. Authorities have stated that they expect around 97 percent of applications to be approved within minutes.
The EU will recommend that travelers apply before purchasing airline tickets or booking hotels to avoid any issues if the ETIAS authorization is denied or delayed.
