Burger King

In August 2019, Burger King rolled out the Impossible Whopper across the United States for those who wanted a plant-based option when dining at the fast food chain. Marketed as “100% Whopper, 0% beef,” the patty was designed to taste like one made of meat.

The item has been a success, with the chain saying its introduction has attracted new customers. It currently remains on the chain’s menu, which is a testament to its continuing popularity.

What is the ‘Impossible Whopper’ made of? Burger King’s veggie burger ingredients

The Impossible Whopper is almost identical to the classic Whopper, except that it is made with a plant-based Impossible Whopper patty. In terms of calories, the vegetarian option packs a little less at 630, compared to the classic that carries 680 calories.

Just like its meaty counterpart, the Impossible Whopper is topped with tomatoes, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, and sliced white onions on a sesame seed bun.

The burger itself, a creation of Impossible Foods- hence the name- is made of soy and potato protein, coconut oil, sunflower oil, and heme, a molecule that gives the patty its meaty taste.

Can vegetarians and vegans eat the Impossible Whopper?

If you are vegan or vegetarian, be warned that the Impossible Whopper patty is prepared on the same broiler as Burger King’s beef patties.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, you can request that your burger be prepared separately. The staff will microwave the patty to avoid cross-contamination with beef, and remove the mayonnaise for vegan diners.

You can also request a plant-based patty to take the place of the beef on any other burger.
