Today is National French Fry Day, a day to celebrate the deep-fried potatoes that have become a popular menu item across the country. Whether you prefer thick wedges or skinny fries, it’s the perfect day to enjoy one of the nation’s favorite foods.

The origins of the holiday

The term ‘french fries’ is believed to have originated from E. Warren’s Cookery for Maids of All Work, published in 1856, which provides a recipe for “French Fried Potatoes.”

The exact origin of the phrase in the United States is still unknown, but it is thought to have originated from World War One. When American soldiers arrived in Belgium during the conflict, they tasted the local delicacy, and as French was the official language of the Belgian Army at the time, the term ‘French fries’ may have been their name for the potatoes.

As a national holiday, there are no other countries that celebrate the beloved food on July 12.
