What is the recipe for Negroni sbagliato? ‘The House of the Dragon’ star Emma D’Arcy’s cocktail of choice

A recent interview with co-star Olivia Cooke has gone viral on Tik Tok leaving many to wonder what the drink actually is.

The author of this article ordered a Negroni last summer. Looking at the author forlornly, the barman replied, “Negronis are a bit of an acquired taste, are you sure?”

The author bought one for himself and his friend; both promptly screwing up their faces after the first sip.

Before this encounter I had never tried a Negroni nor heard of one. Now, thanks to a social media storm, everyone and their dog knows what the vermouth-infused drink is. Specifically, the “Sbagliato” version. This wave of interest has been created by a clip of an intra-cast interview between ‘House of the Dragon’ co-stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke.

Sbagliato means “bungled” or “mistaken” in Italian and it is D’Arcy’s pronunciation that has got plenty of people talking. The video has been viewed more than 30 million times.

So what is the big difference between a normal Negroni and a Negroni Sbagliato?

Negronis are so drinkable, but so strong, which is why they’re so dangerous,” says Henry Jeffreys, drinks writer and author of the Cocktail Dictionary. “The sbagliato is a really good alternative if you want a negroni, but you also want to get something done afterwards.” A sbagliato comes in at about 15 percent, whereas a standard negroni is between 25 percent or 30 percent.

Here are the steps to follow if you want to taste a drink good enough for a Targaryen princess.

The ingredients

  • 1 ounce (25ml) Campari
  • 1 ounce (25ml) 1757 Vermouth di Torino Rosso (or another sweet red vermouth)
  • 1 ounce (25ml) Cinzano Prosecco
  • Small cubed ice
  • A slice of orange

The method

According to BBC goodfood, the recipe is easy; it is just a cocktail after all.

In a highball glass add the Campari and Vermouth with the ice afterward. Next slowly add the prosecco. If it is passed down a long spoon then the bubbles will not overflow.

Slowly stir and then garnish with the orange slice.
