Supplemental Security Income (SSI): How much money is sent each month?
As a result of the 8.7% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase this year, average SSI payments are about $550 a month. The maximum monthly benefit is up to $914 for an individual and $1,371 for a married couple where both spouses are eligible for the program.
How to apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
You can start your SSI application process online only if you are an adult with a disability. SSI applications are not available online for people under 18 with a disability or people over 65 without a disability. These individuals must make an appointment to visit their local Social Security office. The appointment can be made by calling 1-800-772-1213 between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time from Monday through Friday, or online.
Once applied for and approved, SSA will send the monthly SSI payment on the first day of each month. However, they are sometimes sent during the last days of the month as well. This happens if the first day of the following month falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In those cases, payments are advanced to the previous Friday.
